I really wanted to like this book as it's hard to find a novel that mixes historical elements and more contemporary ones, and the publicity for this novel suggested that Howe had been highly successful in doing so. THE PHYSICK BOOK OF DELIVERANCE DANE has it all: believable characters, a love story, friendship, and family connections as well as curses. She wants those around her to think she a strong woman, but we have discovered she isn’t as strong as she seems. Sam thinks nothing of it, but Connie is upset because “it speaks to how alienated we all are from history.” (140) It is in this part of the story that Connie’s character is further developed into the intelligent woman we see her to be.
